From Fire Danger to Atmospheric Composition"

Wildfires are a significant component of the Earth system, emitting large quantities of trace gases and aerosols, which can affect atmospheric composition far away from the emission source. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), implemented by ECMWF on behalf of the European Commission, provides a unique perspective on wildfire emissions and smoke transport, utilising near-real-time satellite observations of wildfire locations, aerosols and trace gases. I will present an overview of how CAMS does this illustrated by examples of acute cases in recent years including Siberia and Colombia.
